Tip of the week - Seasonal Closet Switch (Summer to Winter)
Tip of the week – Seasonal Closet Switch (Summer to Winter). I was living in denial that there was still a bit of time left before the temperature drops and summer is over. What can I say? I grew up in Florida and lived in Tel Aviv for years, sometimes I feel that I can't take the NYC cold! With sadness, I realized it was time to switch out my wardrobe from winter to summer.
Here are some tips on making your seasonal closet switch an easy one:
1) Take out all your clothes from the closet/drawers and put them in categories (shirts, pants, jeans, skirts, dresses, sandals etc.). Once everything is taken out, you'll know exactly home much you have and it will be easier to purge/go through.
2) This is a good time to purge before you store your summer clothes. Go through your piles and decide what to keep, toss, and donate. A good rule of thumb is to ask yourself if you really love it? Do I wear it? Will I wear it? Do I feel great in it? Does it make me happy (for more sentimental items)?
3) We wear lots of layers during the winter, keep some t-shirts, tanks, dresses that will work well under sweaters/jackets. It can be so cold outside, but once we are indoors it feels like summer so definitely do not store all of your summer clothes.
4) Store your summer clothes/shoes – depending on the amount of space you have, consider storing clothes/shoes in large plastic roll out bins that fit under your bed, large suitcases that are not in use, and cloth bins that fit in your closet. For boots, there are special shoe racks you can use or another alternative (if you have the space) is to hang them in the closet.
5) Organize your winter and summer keep clothes back in the closet and drawers. Organize by type, color, and daily routine. Before you put your clothes back think about what you where the most. For example, if you wear your work pants the most, consider putting them in the area of your closet that is most accessible. If you go to the gym a lot, put your workout clothes in one of the top drawers. For winter items, consider putting sweaters on shelves, otherwise they will take a lot of drawer room. Jeans generally look better when they are rolled and put in drawers. Jackets/coats/winter accessories – put in hall closet. You may consider putting hats, scarves, and other winter accessories in bins or baskets.
